<p>With cancer cropping up left and right, people are suddenly becoming more conscious with what they eat and do with their bodies. Fad diets have become a craze and so are gym workouts and alternative exercise for the body. But despite being the in thing to do right now, some people still find it hard to start walking the<span id="more-241"></span> road to a life of health and fitness. After all, when you have already lived a life of debauchery, it will be harder to convert and walk the other road even if it is not as less traveled by.</p>
<p>To help you, here are some of the ways that you can start with your healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>1. Don&#8217;t smoke If you do not have the habit of smoking, good for you. Don&#8217;t try to start as you will only get addicted with the cigarettes and it will be harder to quit when that happens. It is not true that you can smoke and quite when you want to. It&#8217;s not. Once you become hooked into it, there is no turning back. If you are already part of those people who burn their lungs out everyday, the best bet is to make a commitment to quit. By doing this, you are already halfway to recovery. Make sure though that you are serious with your plans and you are not just doing it for any other reason than your health.</p>
<p>2. Lessen the junk One of the ways you can help keep your body healthy is to eat foods that are more natural and with less chemical content. Avoid eating junk foods like those huge packs of potato chips or binge on candies. You should also make it a point to lessen your intake of meats and consume more vegetables, fruits and seafood. This does not mean that you will forgo with meat altogether. You should still eat meat. The protein that it contains is important for some of the basic processes of the body.</p>
<p>3. Skip the Soda and even the iced tea As much as you can, drink water. This is the safest and healthiest drink there is. Sodas even the diet ones, are carbonated and contain high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates which can later be translated into fats. You can also try drinking green tea which can help in the digestive system. Iced tea may be tamer than sodas but these drinks also contain a lot of sugar which can pile up in the body. Stick to water and drink lots of it.</p>
<p>4. Stay active Another way to start living a life of health and fitness witho<br />

ut having to shell out money and make lots of effort is to schedule an exercise routine every day. You can schedule it every morning when you wake up in the morning or do it at night after work. Whichever schedule you want to, make sure that you keep it to 30 minutes long to an hour. That way, you can exercise those muscles and avoid muscle pains. Exercise will also strengthen your bones and your body, promote better breathing and cellular activity, clear the brain and of course keep those extra calories out of the body. Thus, even if you eat a lot, you are not storing those fats and carbohydrates. You are expending them through your workout routine.</p>

You need to first take baby steps, though, especially if you have not had the free time, discipline, or physical ability to do much of anything in the way of exercise for quite some time.</p>
<p>You should start out with an exercise ball, which research indicates is a good, low-impact way to ease into a fitness program. If you are among the millions who have back problems , the exercise ball will help support your lower back during stretching, as well as the abdominal muscles, which will help your posture, and reduce the constant pain in your lower back region. Your ab muscles, and lower back muscles are the core of your body, and need to be tuned to help even the simple activities such as bending, reaching, and walking. Conditioning these hard to reach muscles is easy with an exercise ball, and as simple as it is, qualifies the ball as true fitness equipment.</p>
<p>Once you have been using the exercise ball for 3 weeks or so, start to expand your workouts, and look for more true fitness equipment. A great example is an elliptical trainer than has the advantage of a good cardiovascular workout without the high-impact stress associated with treadmills, as well as working the upper and lower body simultaneously.</p>
<p>You may also want to start looking for a home gym, one that can work specific muscle areas to firm and tone, as well as build, muscle. There are several types of home gyms, some with stretching bands, some with weight stacks, but the bottom line is similar if used correctly: these home gyms can improve your musculature dramatically, and are very affordable.</p>

<p>When seeking a personal trainer, it is necessary for the public to educate themselves on how to interview the right person for the job. While there are many certified personal trainers out there, only a select few of them are truly competent. You should always ask and verify where their certification is from and what their credentials are. There are different types<span id="more-236"></span> and levels of training certifications, only a handful of them are good. Most tests are multiple choice questions that are moderately difficult and some others require some essay or program design but are usually easy. What you need to look for is the continuing education courses the trainers have taken. It is the seminars and practical workshops that make a trainer better.</p>
<p>It is difficult for the public to decipher a good trainer from a bad one. In many cases, even the worst trainer knows more about physical fitness than the average person. Below are some fundamental questions that should be asked before making your choice. They are designed to save you from choosing a bad apple.</p>
<p>Questions you should ask:</p>
<p>* What certifications do they hold?<br />
<br />
* Do they attend workshops and seminars? Which ones?<br />
<br />
* How long have they been a trainer?<br />
<br />
* How thorough was your evaluation? Did they do a medical history and test flexibility, balance, core strength, proprioception, muscle strength and endurance?<br />
<br />
* Are they familiar with functional training (training according to daily activities or a specific goal)?<br />
<br />
* Have they explained the importance of flexibility?<br />
<br />
* Do they stress how important it is to properly brace the core and preserve the lumbar spine?<br />
<br />
* Do they know what P.N.F(Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretching is?<br />
<br />
* Have they explained that function is more important than vanity?<br />
<br />
* Can they explain what they are going to do in the routine and how it benefits you?<br />
<br />
* Did they explain that cardio alone is an inefficient workout?<br />
<br />
* Do they have a basic understanding of nutrition?</p>
<p>If you already have a trainer you can evaluate them:</p>
<p>* Does your trainer understand that a core routine is not a series of floor exercises?<br />
<br />
* Do they understand current research that proves traditional sit ups, leg raises and many of the common exercises that flex the spine can actually be harmful even for healthy people?<br />
<br />
* Are you doing more free weights and medicine balls than machines?<br />
<br />
* Do they ever take notes?<br />
<br />
* Are you being properly warmed up at the beginning and being stretched at the end?<br />
<br />
* Does your trainer change the routine periodically?<br />
<br />
* Does you trainer incorporate balance boards, swiss balls, single leg exercises and other challenged environments?<br />
<br />
* When training the core (midsection) does your trainer explain how important it is to do dynamic multiplantar movements as well as isometric exercises and the importance of low back exercises?<br />
<br />
* Does your trainer target weak areas?<br />
<br />
* If you feel pain in places that you should not like your knees, low back and neck does your trainer change or modify the exercise to a pain free range?<br />
<br />
* Do you truly understand what you are doing while you train?<br />
<br />
* Are you really getting results?<br />
<br />
* Do you do more back exercises than chest and abs?<br />
<br />
* Are you setting goals?<br />
<br />
* Are you talking about you and your needs?<br />
<br />
* Are you getting undivided attention?</p>
<p>If you answered no to any of these questions, then your trainer may be lacking key knowledge that is necessary for you to reach your fitness goals. More importantly, your trainer may be doing you more harm than good. It is simple for a trainer to deceive an unsuspecting client into believing they are knowledgeable. This is due to the general public not being educated about the fitness industry and trusting a gym will provide them with a competent trainer. In most cases, gyms are not always concerned with the quality of the people they are hiring. If a gym thinks a trainer possesses strong sales skills, they will hire them as long as they have some type of certification. A qualified fitness professional will understand at the very least everything listed above. Remember when hiring a trainer to make sure they are a full time professional. Part time does not cut it when it comes to your health. Would you go to a part time Medical Doctor?</p>
<p>Be aware of trainers that are charging low rates. The going rate for a high level trainer in a gym like Equinox or New York Sports Club is around $85-$90/hr even their entry level trainers are $65-$70/hr in addition to membership. There are other gyms that charge way more than the rates just mentioned. In-homes for a high level professional trainer are around $125 and can be more. You may be able to get a really good trainer for $90-$100 depending on travel time, trainers charging much less are either just starting out, not that good or a close friend. You get what you pay for. It is important you research the trainers&#8217; certification and check to make sure they are currently certified by multiple accredited agencies. Presently there is an agency named Ethics Safety Compliance Standards www.escs.info It insures all registered trainers are acting appropriately. Find out if your trainer is registered.</p>
<p>It is important to understand that certifications and degrees certainly help but do not mean everything. You want to know about their clinical experience and the workshops they attend. Ask who they work with and get at least three references to call from current clients. See if they work with any local doctors, all the good trainers work with at least one doctor. </p>
<p>A bad trainer can hurt you &#8211; do your research and make sure they are good.</p>

<p>It is time for a quicker paradigm change when it comes to conditioning for rugby.</p>
<p>Laps of the field based on a &#8216;strong aerobic base&#8217; just wont cut it any more. Here are the reasons why: </p>
<p>1. Ask Yourself &#8211; What are the Demands of Your Position? </p>
<p>Rugby&#8217;s unparalled differences in position and requirements means that when it comes to rugby match fitness, cookie cutter programmes just won&#8217;t cut it. </p>
<p>What do you do during a match?</p>
<p>Write a simple list of what you do in say a 5 minute block of game time. Write what you down to the tiniest detail. If you are a back-row forward your list may look like this:</p>
<p>1. Scrum for 20 seconds</p>
<p>2. Made 2 tackles</p>
<p>3. Jumped and lifted in lineout</p>
<p>4. Did 5 x 10 m sprints</p>
<p>5. Cruised for 30m x 8</p>
<p>6. Cleaned out 12 rucks</p>
<p>Notice the variety and short bursts of work that make up your position? </p>
<p>2. Now construct YOUR Rugby Fitness Programme </p>
<p>There really is no substitute for hard work. But balls to the wall stuff, focusing on laps of the training field just won&#8217;t cut it. 4 x 400m do not take into account the physical nature of rugby &#8211; the fact that once you are hit then contact running becomes the last thing on your mind!</p>
<p>Think about your demands and bearing in mind studies by Eaves (2001) revealed that the ball is in play for around 35 minutes work a session where you are performing as many rugby specific drills in this time zone with minimal rest.</p>
<p>This can include up-downs, hitting tackle shields, conditioned games and short sprint work. </p>
<p>3. Ensure that You Perform Adequate Recovery Protocals </p>
<p>You are never picked for your performance on the training field. Ensure that you find methods of utilising recovery to enable you to recover for the times it matters i.e match days!!</p>
<p>My top three include:</p>
<p>1. Good Sleep</p>
<p>2. Ice Baths</p>
<p>3. Good Nutrition </p>
<p>There really is no easy way to condition for optimal rugby fitness. Just alot of work and preparation in all departments of speed, strength, endurance and power. </p>
